New APE Geocoin!

No monkeying around – the Going APE geocoin will be released during GeoWoodstock VIII. This new APE coin, sanctioned by Groundspeak, celebrates our own “Tunnel of Light,” the only remaining APE cache in the U.S.

The initial release is the GeoWoodstock VIII Edition, with an antique gold finish. (Future mintings will use different metals, so this version is unique.)

The Going APE coin was designed by FluteFace and Avroair. It’s 2 inches tall with hard enamel and seven colors, including one glow and four translucents. The design features the famous “dancing ape” on the front and the Tunnel of Light on the back. The coin has a custom prefix (AP) and custom icon. The “dancing ape” image and custom icon are similar to those for our new APE Cachekinz.

The $12 coin will be sold at the WSGA booth at GeoWoodstock, with a limit of one per customer - and we do expect to sell out. Registered participants for Friday’s Going APE event will receive a voucher redeemable for the purchase of one APE coin at the Annette Lake Trailhead during the event.

GeoWoodstock volunteers: All of you will have the opportunity to buy the gold GeoWoodstock edition of the new APE coin – no worries. Therefore, we are requesting that you not buy a coin during GeoWoodstock, to maximize those we have for attendees. Immediately after GW, WSGA will compile a list of all volunteers - those that worked WSGA events, COWWS events, for vendors, etc. - and send an email with the specifics on ordering your gold APE coin (1 per caching name). So, please don’t worry – you will be able to buy this special coin.

After GeoWoodstock, we will be minting the General edition, which will be antique silver and available to all geocachers on an ongoing basis.

Thanks to Groundspeak for permitting use of the “dancing ape” icon, to Maggie Grogan for designing the new ape image, to Moun10Bike for early coin concepts, and to Avroair for fronting the mint fee.

FYI: This is the second "official" APE geocoin. The first was minted elsewhere in 2007 and quickly sold out. Since the last American APE cache is in our area, it seemed fitting that WSGA create a new APE coin to commemorate this famous series, and Groundspeak agreed.

I've become smitten to absurdity with geocoins. I've started dreaming about them. Do you have binders? Where do you get them, if so? I've not found anything online that I liked.

Also, when new coins are acquired, do you activate most of them? Or leave some unactivated for trade?

Thanks in advance... so many questions, so little time.

Hi everyone,
I am the lead volunteer for the Cascade Pacific Council's Get in the Game! geocaching efforts for our 100th Anniversary of the Boy Scouts of America. We are in the process of hiding caches all over SW Washington and NW Oregon. We have a monthly prize drawing for a cool trackable geocoin. We currently have 6 active caches with several under review and plenty more to come. We have partnered with Groundspeak on this Nation wide effort.

The true treasures of Scouting are the values that we teach our youth, helping them grow with character and integrity. Through the Treasures of Scouting series of public caches, we’ll highlight Scouting values while getting Scouts and non-Scouts alike excited about the programs we offer.....

In each cache there is a monthly drawing card that can be filled out and sent in to the Cascade pacific Council in Portland and you will be entered into the monthly drawing for one of our allotted National BSA Get In The Game! Geocoins. We have less than thirty of these coins and they will be highly sought after by Scouters and Geocachers alike.

Search out our caches, earn a smiley and enter the drawing.
Get In The Game!

If you are interested in helping out hide some caches in your area please contact me through the message board

WSGA / NW coins

Just getting into geocaching, which has now lead into collecting/trading coins. I'm looking for older WSGA coins or any washington coins in general. If anyone has any they're interested in letting go of for cash monies, lemme know. I'm trying to start this collection, but I can only find people who want to trade coins, which makes it tough since I don't have any to trade. I'll also trade for ammo cans since I seem to have "collected" a few of those already.

thanks!

We enjoyed three visits to the Seattle area in 2006, 2007 and 2008 while visiting family in Bellevue. We'd love to get a WSGA Puget Sound Chapter geocoin from one of those years as a memento of the wonderful caching times we had, and the great friends we met. We have unactivated Australian geocoins for 2006 or 2008 that we'd be happy to swap if anyone in WSGA is able to help.
Cheers,
David & Mary

2004-2005 WSGA Geocoin Tracking

As you know if you've tried to log or move one of the 2004 or 2005 WSGA Geocoins on the old site, it doesn't work anymore and you might be asking why and or when will it be fixed.

The "Why" answer is easy. When the old site at geocachingwa.org was being hacked to death, the decision was made to shut most of it down so that it would not be able to be used and the hackers could not have a way to break in. The two biggest areas shut down were the forums and the geocoin tracking.

The "When will it be fixed" answer is a little harder and more complicated. As I understand it, the old database can't just be 'ported' over to the new site and have it work. I'm pretty sure it has to be completely rewritten...which would include all the existing logs for coins (assuming they still exist after the hacking). All this would be very labor intensive.

That's not to say it won't be done, but there are many other things (at this point) that were and are probably higher on the priority list to get done on the new site.

We are very sorry for the inconvenience.

Watch this space for future announcements.

2009 WSGA Geocoin...More Information

Here is the original announcement...

Why are initial sales for members only? Because paid members deserve a chance at them first for their support of the WSGA.

Why a limit of 5? We only ordered 480 originally because that's what we could afford. To give the most people the chance to order we decided to limit the initial sales.

What happens if I'm a member and you sell out before I get to order? If that happens, and we reorder (probable), members would again get first priorty to order...and specifically those that didn't get to order the first time.

What if you don't sell out of the original order? If we don't sell out of the first set, the orders will be opened up to everyone and members that wanted more than the original limit of 5 could also order more.

I'm sure there are other questions...if so, post them here and we'll answer.
