Geo-Smashers??

I saw this story on King's web site. I am curious if anyone else has seen this or heard of this going on in our area. Heres a copy of the story which originally posted on 5/31/10. There are some famous local cachers that were interviewed for store. If you want to see the actual story, go here:

http://www.king5.com/news/local/Geocachers...s-95281104.html

by ERIC WILKINSON / KING 5 News

KING5.com

SEATTLE - Geocaching is a popular pastime here in the Northwest - but one that is now being targetted by a small group of environmentalists. Geocaching is fast becoming "geo-smashing," with vandals destroying caches in the name of protecting forests.

Geocachers use GPS systems to search for hidden treasures left behind by fellow game players. Hiking trails are among the most popular spots.

"It's so peaceful. It's just beautiful out here," says David Vaughn as he hunts for treasure on Cougar Mountain near Issaquah.

"This is one of those places that I may not have even known existed," says David's wife Jacquie. "It probably never would have been on my beaten path."

But it's what happens off that beaten path that has some taking matters into their own hands.

People calling themselves "Forest Defenders" have been searching out the caches themselves and destroying them - tossing them in the trash and posting pictures on the internet. They say cachers are harming habitats and destroying fragile vegetation by traipsing off the trails. They even claim caches have been planted on a sacred Indian burial site on Whidbey Island.

Geocachers admit there are some who head off the trails to places they shouldn't be, but they also say they're working to educate those folks about responsible geocaching. Geocachers say they regularly clean up trails and parks. They held an Earth Day event earlier this year in Carnation.

"It wasn't just plastic bottles and cigarette butts," says Jacquie. "We ended up pulling out a lawnmower. Parts of bikes."

But even as geocachers continue their quests -- critics are hot on the trail. One blogger posting "this will not be tolerated" and "not on my watch."

Cache Rescue Program

With GeoWoodstock coming up, now is a good time to point to a fairly new feature of the WSGA website.

Our new Cache Rescue Program is modeled after a similar program that the Wisconson Geocaching Association is doing. You have the opportunity to earn points for helping eliminate geolitter and helping cache owners perform maintenance on those caches they just can't get to.

At the present time, caches to be nominated for pickup or verification that they are missing should:

1. Have been archived by an absentee owner or reviewer, with remnants of the cache remaining at the cache site.
2. Archived by the owner and the owner requested someone pick up the cache.

We will not accept listings of caches archived by a local owner unless there are special circumstances. The cache belongs to its owner, and we do not want to be accused of facilitating cache piracy.

If a cache needs maintenance, the cache can also be listed. For now, only maintenance requests posted by cache owners will be approved unless there are special circumstances.

You will receive:

1 Point for nominating a cache.
1 Point for verifying that a cache is missing if you have not found the cache before.
2 Points for verifying that a cache is missing if you are a previous finder of the cache.
5 Points for removing an archived cache and verifying that all pieces have been picked up and the area cleaned.
1 Point for performing requested maintenance on a cache.

A mission will be marked as complete when:

- Two people have verified a cache as not at its location, with at least one of them being a previous finder.
- One person verifying that they have removed the cache.
- A log is submitted that the requested maintenance has been performed.

Please note that cache owners cannot earn points for performing maintenance on their own caches.

I'm the KCP geocaching liaison, and they knew there was a cache here, so they wanted me to know, so I could get the word out before they took the ladder down.
Pre-caching, we owned a Magellan Meridian Color GPSr. I think we bought it in 2004 or so. I thought I had a great idea- attach a TB tag to it and have it be the fanciest paperweight on the road. Then I saw that some people are still using them and even selling them on Ebay.

Ours isn't new and we don't have the box, but it works and if I look I can likely come up with the cable it came with. We'll never use it again but maybe someone could use a free GPSr, even an antique one.

Anyone know of someone who could use it? Scout troop? Educational project? Other?

We are working on getting a cache recommendation section added to the site, but we need your cache recommendations. In conjunction with the chapter reps we will build the lists based on feedback from you. We will group the recommendations by the WSGA Chapters. The lists will be built using the bookmark lists available on the WSGA account on Geocaching.com, for easy pocket query creation, there will be links from the WSGA site to these bookmark lists.

What we need from you is a list of caches you would recommend to a visitor. Great views, awesome camo, significant location, best hikes, you get the idea. Send us an email and include the region of the state the cache(s) is in, based on the WSGA chapter if known, the city if it is urban, and a short description of why. The intent is to show off the state, but also provide some variety for each area. No guarantee that all the caches suggested will be added to the list.

Please title the email 'Cache Recommendations region', where region would be the area the cache(s) are located and send them to wsga.cache.recommendations@gmail.com.

Last night I successfully hunted cache find number 99. Now that I have a pretty good feel for the types I like, I'm planning to place some of my own caches. (I think some of my ideas are kind of elaborate, so I'm not sure how to proceed with them: if anyone is open to me asking a few questions off the record so I can get them placed, I'd be very happy to talk with you.)

But what I'd really like at the moment is to hear about your favorite caches so I can choose a really awesome one for find number 100. So far, I haven't done any that are tougher than 3.5, but that's something I plan to remedy before the weather gets too nice and all the leaves come flooding back.

So, please, veterans! Tell me about some cool caches you've done that are fit for a nice first milestone like this. :)

Get In The Game!

Get in the Game! with Geocaching

CPCBSA Treasures of Scouting

The true treasures of Scouting are the values that we teach our youth, helping them grow with character and integrity. Through the Treasures of Scouting series of public caches, we’ll highlight Scouting values while getting Scouts and non-Scouts alike excited about the programs we offer.

Give kids a palm-size computer, tell them to hunt for hidden treasure, and watch them go! That’s just what we do through geocaching, a high-tech scavenger hunt that’s already adding excitement to outdoor Scouting programs nationwide.

The premise of the game is simple: Players hide and seek containers—called “caches” or “geocaches”—outdoors using GPS navigation devices. Then, they go online to Geocaching.com to report what they’ve found and give clues to others that might want to seek what they just hid.

Geocaching can be much more than a fun unit activity, though. As part of our 100th Anniversary Celebration, we’re using geocaching to get at a goal that’s important to every Scouter: membership recruitment and retention. Through the Get in the Game! program, Scouts and non-Scouts alike will be invited to join the adventure. In addition to inviting them to participate in events, we’ll also reach out to kids that are actively involved with geocaching, but not Scouting.

“Kids today are captivated by technology,” said Mary Stevens, Advisor of Crew 84 in San Rafael, Calif. and Get in the Game! Volunteer Lead. “This is a great way to introduce them to how much fun Scouting can be, and on their terms.”

On top of introducing youth to Scouting, Get in the Game! teaches lessons that parents will appreciate. Lessons like leadership, problem solving, cooperation, teamwork, respect for nature, and— in true Scouting form—orienteering.

“We haven’t replaced the map and compass, but GPS is a great addition,” Scout Executive Matt Devore said. “We’re celebrating 100 years of Scouting in America by showing we’re just as exciting, action-oriented, and relevant for today’s kids as we were when our journey began.”

This program is also a great way to find and reconnect with Scouting alumni who are active in the sport. One Scouting alumnus that found a cache wrote in the logbook, “Wow. Didn't know the BSA is getting into geocaching. Makes me wish I had contact with a troop or pack again.”

Caches are being hidden from Salem to Longview. And everyone (Scout or not) is invited to seek them out. Go to www.geocaching.com , and type in “CPCBSA Treasures of Scouting” . to find out where they’re stashed. But, don’t venture out empty-handed. Geocaching etiquette states you can take a prize from a cache, but only if you leave another in its place. For our 100th Anniversary Celebration, we’re tapping into the fun and excitement of geocaching to impact important council goals like membership and volunteer recruitment. What better way is there to get kids to join Scouting than to show just how much fun it can be? Through Get in the Game! geocaching events, Scouts and non-Scouts alike will participate in fast-paced, high-tech treasure hunts. This is a great way to share Scouting skills—and outdoor adventure—with a generation captivated by technology. It also provides a great way to share the excitement of the 100th Anniversary Celebration while highlighting core Scouting values.

The geocaching authorities at Groundspeak, creators of Geocaching.com, have partnered with the BSA to take Get in the Game! to a new level. The standard membership is free and easy to join. Having a free membership allows you to search for caches in your area and allows you to log your finds on the website for each cache. Remember to create your free account at www.geocaching.com and search for “CPCBSA Treasures of Scouting” . Then head out and have fun finding our caches.

Ape cache interest for Nov 16th?

Hi,

I will be in Portland mid of November and being so close to the Ape cache I am of course tempted to try it. The almost only choice I have in terms of time would be Nov 16th - a Monday. Given the time of year and the fun it generally adds to do things together: Is there anyone out near the route Portland -> Ape cache who would like to join me or who even has his/her own car (better than a rental) to use for this? Of course I would pay the expenses in that case... It would be so much better to do this cache not alone...

kfl

Multi & Puzzle Caches w/Coord Checks

I dont know about the rest of the caching community, but when I decide to attack an offset multi or a puzzle/mystery cache, I like having a coordinate checker like "GeoCheck" on the cache page. I like to know before I go out and blow an hour or more trying to find a cache thats not at the coordinates that I am at. Now, one could always contact the CO via email to verify coordinates, but lets face it gang, how many times have you contacted a CO about a cache and NOT get a response back! I can go on a separate rant on this subject and perhaps I will. But non-responsive COs furthers my point about Grounspeak requiring a check sums or better yet, a coordinates checker be require on offset multis and puzzle caches.

Whats your thoughts??????

Caches found that clearly are in the wrong spot

I just recently found a cache that was out in the open, not hidden well, and did not match its exact location per the cache page. In this instance, the cache appeared to have slid down a ravine thus in plain sight possibly by an animal or the previous finding not putting back properly. I suppose it could have been muggled as well, though the entire contents of the cahed appeared to be in proper order. Anyway, I had a bit of a dilema on my hands. I could A) put it back where I found it which most certainly the cache would have slid further down a steep ravine and out of sight and reach OR B put it somewhere close to where the cache description and coords placed it. I decided with plan B on this. I did not want the cache to slide down the ravine. I ended up contacting the CO on this to advise him as to what happened and what I did to resolve the manner. Is there a protocol on this scenario?

The fundemental object of Geocaching

I made this point in the GC beginners forums, thought I'd express it here as well:

If you look at what would be a fundamentally pure Geocache it would be a box, a logbook, and a set of coordinates only. That's it. No hint. No directions on how to get there. Just a set of coordinates. You seek the box with the technology of the Global Positioning System. That's the whole of it.

The joy of it is using the technology to find an object at the coordinate, and more importantly, the journey there, and the adventures that brings.

Do we disappoint ourselves by expecting too much assistance in our game and always demanding guaranteed success?

Are we missing the point of the challenge, the journey there, and the rewards that are inherent unguaranteed success.

Heres my gripe.

Lets say you are in, oh hell, how about Cocoa Beach, Florida visiting long lost relatives and doing a little caching. The way the groundspeak current has the website set up, you hop on your own webpage, the coords land you at your home which is some 3000 miles northwest of Cocoa Beach, FL. The only options to search for caches are by zip code, address, state and country as well as coords. All of which would be quite hard to punch up when searching on say ones I-Phone. Now, it would be a lot easier if you could search by city and state as it would narrow you search to your general location. The way I see it, most people know where they are, even while on vacation or out of town. However, most people DO NOT know the zip code of where they are while out of town or on vacation.

What do you all think?

Cache Saturation/Placement

Hi folks.

I'm hoping I can get some good ideas and thoughts from you all. A bit of history: my partner and I are new to caching. We decided at the beginning that we'd wait until we had at least 100 finds under our belt before placing a cache. It just made sense to us to have an idea of what was out there before we tried hiding.

We've reached the point where we want to place a cache. We cammo'd an ammo box beautifully, got the swag, and picked a place. And of course, ran smack into the distance rule despite good efforts not to be too close to other caches.

The reviewer had a couple of suggestions, and last night we did an extensive canvassing of the site and found a spot. Then came the verdict- now it was too close to a multi-stage cache's endpoint. But the reviewer didn't tell me which one (I asked) or how far off it was.

So now what? Do I abandon the site and search for another? How should I try to work around endpoint of multi's I haven't done? Am I asking stupid questions? I just want to abide by the rules but have some hiding fun, too.

FWIW, the reviewer was great and I've no complaints about him/her and the rule. I guess I'm looking for experiences from others and perhaps some advice. It seems my desire to have a cache close by for easy maintenance may not be possible in such a cache-rich area. Thanks for reading.

Most Found in Washington State

Hi folks -

I'm active in the New York Metro geocaching community and just for kicks have started working on a bookmark list of the caches with the most finds in each state. (I'm restricting myself to caches with a physical container - no virtuals, locationless, etc.) I've been doing much of the research by hand, but I thought that if anyone would know where my research efforts have failed it would be active local cachers in different communities.

So I'm here because I do suspect that I may have whiffed for the state of Washington. The best I've been able to come up with so far is Tukwila Pond (http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?guid=b3f1bf4c-3150-4e76-b48c-34c938ce0df7) at 807 finds, followed closely by Under the Needle (http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?guid=7abb7536-8523-4d8b-a3bc-59b7ae2c48c8) at 794.

Does anyone know if I can do better?

Thanks very much,
addisonbr

(And feel free to visit - you can find us at http://metrogc.org/forum/.
Tiffany Park Area. Has anyone else found bullets in a cache?

I posted this on the geocaching.com forums and I thought I should post it here also to spread the word.

I found some red plastic tipped bullets in a couple of caches in the Renton (Tiffany Park) area today. They appear to be .22 caliber (guessing) brass cartridge with a copper bullet that has a red plastic tip. There appears to be an "H" stamped in the bottom of the cartridge. I found a picture that looks like the slug. They almost look like toys, but according to a friend they are real.

Any ideas on what I should do with them? I notified the cache owners, and I sent an email to the person(s) that found the cache just before I did to see if they were already there. I just heard back from them and as of 8:30 am there were not any bullets in either of the caches. I found them about 3:45 this afternoon.

The thing that really bothers me are one of the caches was designed for kids.

So a heads up for everyone, it appears that someone is leaving bullets in caches. If you know of anyone who has a cache in the Tiffany Park area of Renton, you may want to warn them and have them check there caches.

Terrible Ts

EDIT: Updated the picture link.

Caches along a route

I've known that you can use Google Earth to create routes to feed into the "Caches along a route" function at geocaching.com, but I'd always been frustrated at the limitation Google Earth has in only specifying start and stop points. Turns out, you can set up a map in Google Maps then export it into Google Earth's "kml" format.

1. Set up your route in Google Maps. I love being able to pick up an intermediate point and watch it try to reroute - it's very useful. For example, I'm going biking in Pendleton next month. On the drive up, Yakima Valley is a *gorgeous* alternative to part of I-82... and has some geocaches. I just add an intermediate point south of Thrall and.. badda bing!

2. Once your routing is set up to your satisfaction, click on "link" and a little box will pop up with an URL that only robots could love.

3. Copy this whole line. Open up a new tab and paste what you copied into your browser's address bar. Before hitting return, append: &output=kml

4. Hit return. If you're using Firefox, it'll ask you if you want to save it or launch Google Earth.

Now at this point, you might think you can just upload this file to Geocaching.com's "Caches along a route" feature. Unfortunately, when I tried this, I get ... nothing. (But really, the user interface is so confoundingly bad, I wasn't surprised. Sigh.) Only after I'd read the file into Google Earth and written it right back out using File -> Save As would geocaching.com accept it.

From the Bellingham Herald of January 23:

... National Geographic has plans to develop a geotourism map guide for the Central Cascades. The idea is to map 150 places to visit and sights to see in the region -- bounded by Mount Rainier to the north, Crater Lake to the south, Interstate 5 to the west and US 97 to the east.

"We want to celebrate what makes your place special, what makes it stand out," said Jim Dion, associate director for the magazine's Center for Sustainable Destinations. And National Geographic wants help picking those 150 places.

Now through March 29, the public can nominate -- online -- people, places and things to do in the Central Cascades. From those nominations, Dion and others will cull the list to the best representations of nature, culture, and social elements of the region.

Just as important as place nominations will be personal interviews. Dion said they want to talk to people who will describe the flavor of the region. "We're looking for people like a real good fishing guide, an art gallery owner or interpretive ranger," he said. "It's how we can communicate a sense of place through people's own eyes."

Nominations may be made through March 29 at The Central Cascades

"Hiker orange clothing" is defined as a minimum of four hundred square inches of fluorescent orange exterior clothing worn above the waist and visible from all sides.

-----

I have missed feelings on this one. Anyone else? I should note that there is almost ALWAYS some hunting season open, so I'm not sure this would apply only during the Sept/Oct/Nov Deer and Elk seasons.

Cacher Etiquette Question

When you come across a cache whose log is extremely soaked, and you have spare paper, is it preferable to:

1) mark the cache as "needs maintenance?"
or
2) replace the wet log with a dry one, remove the old one (so the new doesn't absorb the old's wetness) and offer to send it to the cache owner.

Obviously, the intent of #2 is to help the cache owner out since you're already there, but I'm not sure if that's too helpful...

iPhone

One of the newer Geocaching products on the market is the Groundspeak application on the iPhone. It would be interesting to hear if anybody is using it for Geocaching and how its impacted how they a doing it. I've only done about 3 caches so far and can say that I changed my paperless caching process. I use the iPhone for my cache info and my Garmin to find the cache. I'll need more time to decide on the GPSr function on the iPhone.

Naming that Cache

Hello Washington Cachers. My family and I are new to this hobby/sport/passion/obsession. We've found a few spots to hide those caches and some good ideas on subject/content of the cache.
My question to the geonation is where do you come up with the name for your cache?
Obvious answers are where it is, but anybody have anything clever to add here?
Enquiring minds want to know...

Learn something new lately?

Time to move the forum activity along here so I'll give a shot.
I've been around awhile but I'm always learning something new and not afraid to admit it. Maybe you already knew it, maybe you didn't. Here's a place to pass those tidbits along or ask for solutions.

The other day I finally learned of a way to bring those custom POI's to the forefront, to where they are not being buried by those factory POI's on the map screen. On your map menu change the "map points" from "auto" to "500 miles". This will show your custom POI's all the time. Then change your map detail from "normal" to "least". The factory guys disappear unless zoomed in and the custom POI's remain prominent. Give it a try.
