UH-OH!! New Cacher on the Block!!

Greetings!! As a (somewhat) long-time cacher - and a brand new Southwest Washington Chapter member - I'd like to introduce myself! My name is Jo Dunn; my caching nick is idajo2 and since I began caching I've been a member of a number of WSGA Chapters (Puget Sound, North 48 and, now, SW Washington). One of the my favorite things about Chapter affiliation - and caching in general - is the opportunity to meet others who share my love for this hobby/obsession/addiction/pastime!!

I moved to Seattle almost 13 years ago and I hope to spend my "golden years" in Washington State . . I'm *only* 60, so that'll give me something to look forward to down the road! In addition to Shoreline, I've lived in Monroe and Mount Vernon (for a very brief time) before relocating to Ridgefield to be near family. I plan to plant my feet in this neck of the woods for a while so I hope to hear from Southwest Washington cachers who'd like to join me for a cup of coffee and some time to "talk a little cache"!

Regards,

Jo

New chapter?

Hello my fellow southwest washington geocachers! My name is Jon (aka ccccwu17 in geocaching). I recently moved from Ellensburg back to home home area, which is Tenino/Rochester. I was looking to see what chapter I was affliated with because I really wanted to start become an active participant. To my surprise, Thurston, Grays Harbor and Mason counties are not really affliated with a particular chapter, only very loosely with both this chapter and the Puget Sound chapters. I voiced this concern on the general discussion boards in the WSGA Chapters portion of this website. One of the site administrators let me know that the WSGA has been trying for quite a while now to get a chapter started in this target area, but no one as been willing to take charge and really pursue this. Well, I decided that I would like to be that person. I thought this might be more convient for those of you in this chapter located in Northern Lewis County, more specifically Centraila, Chehalis, Napavine, Winlock and Toledo. I was wondering what this particular chapter would think if that particular area was included in this new, fresh attempt at starting a new chapter. I figured with the economy and gas prices as it is, more people are not so willing to drive to either Vancouver or Bellevue to attended chapter meetings and if there were a chapter located within at least a 30 minute driving distance from them they would attended and participate in meetings and chapter functions because of the distance/time issue. Please, I would like to hear all thoughts and opinions on this matter. If you would like to help in seeing this idea become and reality, please feel free to voice those opinions too.

Thanks for your guys time. Sorry this is such a long post.

Jon (ccccwu17)

Chapter Participation

Hello fellow chapter members! Is anyone out there still interested in this chapter????
We recently had a chapter CITO event and only one member attended besides us. It is hard to run a chapter with no participation.
We have posted a new event for June and have only had two responses from members. We would love to have other chapter members participate in our upcoming 8th Annual Columbia River Gorge Geocachers Potluck, GC1R3Y4, on June 20th. We proudly fly the chapter banner at each event and would like to extend the opportunity for each member to come out and support the chapter and WSGA.

Chapter News for March

Edit: This was submitted to me by gonegeofishing, the Southwest WA Chapter representative, for the March newsletter. Since the submission included several important items, I included the entire text here to supplement the edited version for the newsletter. I should have made it clear where the source of this information came from -- I apologize for any confusion that this oversight may have caused....Half-Canadian

On the 30th of January we held our first meeting/event of the year "Anchovies Anyone?" with a great turnout. It was a lot of fun too see familiar faces and a lot of new ones. Was quite a few visitors from our neighbor to south, Oregon. We covered a lot of areas including the Summer Campout, Advocacy Committee, a local CITO, and what direction we would like to see our chapter head in. Quite a few ammo cans were available for sale and many were purchased. A huge thanks to Scubasonic for the donation of a door prize for the raffle. A brand new GPS.

Our overall membership is up from the beginnining of the year and continues to grow. As the membership grows it allows us to have bigger and better events in the future. To all the new chapter members, welcome aboard.

The Summer Campout listing has been submitted and is now published: GC1MYH1. We welcome any ideas for the event and listing page from the entire WSGA membership. There is still work to do on the listing page and planning for the event. Looking forward to making Summer Campout 2009 one to remember.

Official 2009 CITO weekend - May 2-3

Geocaching's official CITO weekend is looming on the horizon - May 2-3. It's time to start thinking of locations in your area that would benefit from some help from the local geocaching community. Groundspeak rules require that CITOs and other events must be submitted for publication at least two weeks in advance, but if you arrange your event farther ahead of time, you can get in on something really cool from the WSGA!

All CITO weekend events arranged by March 25 will be included in the upcoming WSGA CITO t-shirt. It will feature a map of our state with all of the 2009 CITO events plotted on it. Groundspeak will not be producing a CITO shirt this year, so this will be the only 2009 CITO shirt available for the state of Washington. Details about the shirts will be coming soon from Laurie our WSGA President, but don't miss the opportunity for your event to be included!

The WSGA's goal for CITO Weekend 2009 is to have at least two events held within each chapter. If more can be held within any chapters, that will be even better! This is the biggest and best way we have to build good relations with the land managers who oversee all the wonderful places that we get to play, and to give back to our environment.

Putting on a CITO event is very easy to do, but to make it even easier I will be posting additional topics on the CITO forum soon with tips on how to organize a successful CITO event. In the meantime, who in the Southwest Washington Chapter is going to step up and agree to host an event? Let's hear from you so we can make a big impact in our state with CITO this year!

Don't be shy SW Washington

Okay. I will get the ball rolling.
My wife "1fairygirl" and I started geocaching in March of 2007. We quickly embraced this sport, hobby, addiction. We maintain seperate accounts but always geocache as a team with all our hides under her account.
The game has given us a guided tour of so many spectacular places that we had no idea existed in our area over a very a short time. Thank you to all those wonderful hiders for your gifts.
One unexpected benefit to the game was the social aspect. We have meet so many wonderful people who share a lot of the same interests. Not the least being geocaching.
When the idea of forming a SW Washington Chapter of WSGA was brought forward by Washington's Webbed Feet, we thought the idea was great. We were fortunate enough to host the first official chapter event last june and unveil the new SW Chapter banner.
The turnout at our last event was great fun and very encouraging. It appears that our fledgling chapter is well on its way.
Some things that I see that are needed in the future are continuing to increase enrollment, encourage communication and participation amongst the chapter members, and have more events.
The new website and forums really help to facilitate this. Each day the site gets better and better.
We hope to see you out on the trail or visit with you at our next events.
Please feel free to email us if you happen to head east up the Columbia Gorge and have questions about some of the great caching opportunities out this way.

He has been busy this summer helping to organize the Country Cachin' event, where he unveiled the new chapter banner. He was also busy helping to set up the Not Just Another Park and Grab event that many of you attended. We are putting together a website for Columbia River Gorge Geocachers if anyone would like to check it out and give us some constructive criticism on how to improve the website.
I know that I would like to see our chapter become much more active this next year. I realize we are a new chapter but I think that if more of us get actively involved than we will be able to attact new members. Looking forward to the 2009 WSGA caching season and hope to see our chapter grow with the new year.
See you all at the Pizza Anyone event, 1FairyGirl
