Caching restrictions on public lands

Posted By:  hydnsek @ Today, 02:15 PM
The BLM in central Oregon and the Arizona State Trust have recently restricted or banned caches on their lands. Read more.

Fortunately, WSGA works closely with land managers in Washington State to avoid these sorts of issues and to address them when they do occur with education and mitigation. Our Park Liaison Program has been very successful over the past four years, building strong relationships that have actually opened more areas to caching, and reversed some bans (most notably, Discovery Park in Seattle).

However, we should all be aware of the impact careless caching can have - both on the land and in the eyes of land managers. Let's all be careful and respectful of our environment and its stewards, so we can continue to enjoy this great hobby everywhere.

12th Annual CITO Weekend

Posted By:  hydnsek @ Yesterday, 03:15 PM
This weekend, April 26-27, is the 12th annual CITO weekend, with a new souvenir for those who host/attend a CITO. Washington has nine CITOs scheduled around the state, and we hope to see you at one!

For those attending the 7th-annual Cougar Mountain CITO, we'll be renovating Red Town Meadow, part of the historic Red Town mining area. It's a key project, and we were selected for it because we always have a large and hard-working group.

New Southwest and Olympic Chapter Reps

Posted By:  hydnsek @ Apr 4 2014, 11:47 AM
I'm thrilled to announce the appointments of polyclayartist as Olympic Peninsula Chapter Rep and verano as Southwest Chapter Rep, giving us a complete 11-member WSGA Board of Directors for 2014.

As you know, these two positions were vacant when we announced the 2014 Board, and we thank Patti (polyclayartist) and Debbi (verano) for volunteering to fill the positions, esp. as both are new WSGA members.

Summer Campout at Sun Lakes SP

Posted By:  hydnsek @ Mar 26 2014, 10:42 PM

It's not too early to think about the Summer Campout. Our 11th annual campout is at Sun Lakes State Park in central WA on July 25-27, hosted by Sunshine Geo and the Inland Empire chapter. As always, attendees will receive a campout pathtag, and the Saturday dinner will include prizes and the WSGA Annual General Meeting.

The event page is up so you can check out the details and let us know your plans. Registration is open, and last year, we sold out of RV spots, so don't delay, sign up today!

Grants Awarded to Auburn and Mt Vernon Parks

Posted By:  hydnsek @ Mar 20 2014, 01:15 AM

Congratulations to Auburn Parks & Recreation and Mount Vernon Parks Foundation, the first recipients of funds from WSGA's new Small Grant Program! Each park system is receiving $250 in grant money for their geocaching projects, and will provide a report back to us on the results.

Peach&Pete (Annette Bailes), the Auburn park liaison, presented a strong proposal for Auburn's plan to hold a series of geocaching classes, promote caching as a family-friendly activity in Auburn parks, and place new caches to encourage recreation in Auburn parks. Even better, Auburn parks is providing matching funds to further the geocaching program.

VonDeets (Tom Wenzl), the Mount Vernon park liaison, also presented a proposal for geocaching classes, as well as a larger caching program that includes a geocoin challenge in celebration of the city's anniversary, and may include the mayor and business owners as well as the parks.

We announced the Small Grant Program in January 2014. It provides annual funding of up to $500 to support geocaching-related projects in Washington. The Small Grant Program (PDF file) is available to individuals, groups, park systems, and nonprofit organizations working on geocaching-related activities that will positively impact the Washington geocaching community and further the club's goals.

It's exciting to see city parks engaged in geocaching as a recreational family activity! And note that both grant applications were submitted by the WSGA park liaisons, who are driving the geocaching programs with their park systems. Great to see our Park Liaison Program continuing to grow and expand, serving as a key resource for park systems. Well done, Peach&Pete and VonDeets!

Thanks again to Benandjayme (Ben Hewitt), who created the program, got Board approval, and led the the grant committee.
